My name is Alex Johannigman. I’m a engineer by education, business analyst by trade, master of theology according to my graduate degree, and blogger whenever I have a strong opinion about something that needs to be shared. I recently spent a year of my life serving the homeless as a Catholic missionary, and that experience had a profound impact on my prayer life and how I view those who are living in material and spiritual poverty in the world. I also wrote about it a ton on this blog.
Sometimes I can be very serious and contemplative…
But most of the time I’m anything but.
I have a lot of passions in life, from theater, music, and dancing to board games, good beer, and anything science fiction and fantasy related. But none of those passions compare with my love for God and the Catholic Church. This blog is devoted to discussing topics of love, religion, politics, and anything else that I consider in need of some geeky Catholic commentary.

Dear Alex, I am reaching out to Catholic bloggers hoping to help a project go viral. Over the past few weeks I have been working with Tom Quiner, a musician and composer who lives in the Diocese of Des Moines, on a Kickstarter fundraiser for his upcoming production of The Wedding at Cana, his newest musical which has been written to be performed as dinner theater. You may you have seen or know of his other productions via YouTube, such as The Pope of the People and The Woman at the Well. Fittingly, the production of the Wedding of Cana is intended to open this spring during the year of the church’s focus on marriage and the family.
Tom is passionate about this project and his musicals are ministry. Kickstarter is a crowd-source funding mechanism used by many people today to raise funds for endeavors such as this. The money will go toward production costs (costumes and sets so the production doesn’t look like a 7th grade play) and also so the music can be professionally recorded (strings and other instruments) so the performers will sing on top of the recorded soundtrack. Also the funding will help to professionally film and edit the production so Tom can package the script and music, and the directors notes along with the sound track and the directors notes for other parishes across the diocese, the state and the country to replicate. For Tom this is pure ministry. He calls it “Evangelization through Entertainment.”
Kickstarter is a timed fundraising mechanism, and there are now 5 short days left to the campaign. The goal is to reach $15,000 and Tom is 79% of the way there — with $3,200 left to go in the next 6 days. And with Kickstarter, you raise it all or you don’t get any of the pledges. I am reaching out to you to see if you can help us to make connections with people who may be interested in being patrons of the Catholic arts who might be able to help toward this goal in these last few days.
